Trustee Directors

BTPS has a corporate trustee, BT Pension Scheme Trustees Ltd, and this company has nine Trustee directors. In addition to the Chairman, there are four BT representatives and four member representatives on the board. Currently, the Trustee directors are:

Rod Kent - Chairman
Appointed: 1 January 2008. Rod Kent has been Chairman of Bradford and Bingley since November 2002. He was Managing Director of Close Brothers for 28 years, during which time he led the management buy-out in 1979 and took the company public in 1984; he has been a Non-executive Director of Close Brothers Group plc since October 2002, and was appointed Chairman in November 2006. He is also Chairman of Grosvenor Limited, a Non-executive Director of Grosvenor Group Limited, and a Governor of the Wellcome Trust.

David Barford
Appointed 1 January 2006. David Barford qualified as an actuary in 1972 and has worked in the actuarial and human resource consulting business since 1970. Previously, he was Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Mercer Human Resource Consulting Ltd and a director of the global firm Mercer Inc.


Les Cullen
Appointed 1 May 2006. Leslie Cullen has been Finance Director of a number of well known large companies including Prudential plc and Inchcape plc. He is a non executive director of Avis Europe plc and DTZ Holdings plc where he also chairs the Audit Committees and of F & C Global Smaller Companies plc and Interserve plc. He is a Trustee of Sustrans Limited, a charity, and has also been chairman of several private equity backed companies. He has a degree in economics and an MBA and is a Fellow of the Association of Certified Accountants and of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.

Chris Long
Appointed: 28 April 1995. Chris Long joined the then Post Office Telephones in 1972, and soon became involved in the Trade Union UPW (later to become the UCW) being elected to the Executive Council in 1987. Subsequently National Chairman and Joint President of the CWU upon the merger of the UCW and NCU. Also a member of the Employment Tribunal and a BTPS deferred pensioner.

Donald MacDonald
Appointed: 1 May 1998. Donald MacDonald retired from the CWU in 2004. He had been the Union's Telecom Recruitment Officer, and was formerly President of the Union. A Post Office and BT telecommunications technician for many years, he previously served as a Director of BT Quest Ltd (BT Qualifying Employee Shares Trust) as an employee representative. Donald is a member of the CWU and of UNITE (formerly the National Federation of Post Office and BT Pensioners), and Chairman of United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment. He is a BTPS pensioner.

Howard Marchant
Appointed: 1 September 1995.Educated City of Leicester Boys School and Manchester University (Graduated in Biology). Postgraduate Management Diploma at Leicester Business School. Howard worked in Post Office telecomms/BT in various management roles before becoming Deputy General Secretary of Society of Telecomms Executives (now Connect) until 1995. He is a BTPS pensioner and a member of Connect and UNITE (formerly the National Federation of Post Office & BT Pensioners).

Bill McClory
Appointed: 1 September 1997. Billy McClory was employed by Post Office Telecommunications 1968-78, became a National Officer of CPSA, then NCU in 1984 and CWU in 1995. Responsible in the NCU for pension matters in the Post Office and BT, Billy was the lead officer on pension matters for the BT Unions 1990-97. He is a member of the Trustees Code of Practice Working Group and of UNITE (formerly the National Federation of Post Office & BT Pensioners).

Andrew Parker
Appointed 9 April 2008. Andrew Parker became Company Secretary of BT Group PLC with effect from 1 April 2008. He has previously held roles as General Counsel of two of BT's operational divisions, most recently of BT Retail. He has a degree in Law and is a qualified Solicitor. He is an active member of BTPS.

John Wroe
Appointed 1 July 2007. John Wroe is Director Group Financial Control & Treasury of BT Group, responsible for BT’s financial reporting, tax, and treasury activities. John has a degree in economics and is a Chartered Accountant. He joined BT in 1992, prior to which he worked for Coopers & Lybrand. He is an active member of BTPS.

The Chairman is appointed by BT with the agreement of the BT Trade Unions. Messrs Barford, Cullen, Parker and Wroe have been appointed by BT as company representatives. Messrs Long, MacDonald, Marchant and McClory were nominated by the BT Trade Unions as member representatives.
