Your Trustee Directors
BTPS has a corporate trustee, BT Pension Scheme Trustees Ltd, and this company currently has nine Trustee Directors. In addition to the Chairman*, there are four employer nominated Trustee Directors and four member nominated Trustee Directors on the board.
*The Chairman is appointed by BT with the agreement of the recognised BT Trade Unions and NFOP.

Appointed: 11 January 2011. Adrian Askew became a National Official of the Society of Telecom Executives (now the Connect Sector of Prospect) in 1987 and retired as General Secretary of Connect at the end of 2009. He was lead officer on pensions matters for the BT Unions from 1997-2003 and was Chair of Trustees for the Connect Pension and Life Assurance Scheme from 2003-2009. He is a member of the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners.
Appointed: 15 September 2011. David represents, and is a director of Law Debenture which is a professional independent trustee of pension schemes. David has over 30 years’ experience of working with pension funds in both the public and private sectors, first at Morgan Grenfell (now part of Deutsche Bank) as a fixed income fund manager and then at Kleinwort Benson (now owned by Allianz) where he was Head of Fixed Income between 1992 and 1998. David is a fellow of the Securities Institute.
Appointed: 11 January 2017. Ben Marshall is currently National Secretary of the Prospect Communications, Media and Digital Sector, and in that role is the union’s chief negotiator with BT on all major terms and conditions of employment. He has been responsible for negotiations with BT on the BT Pension Scheme for over twenty years. He has worked for the union for over thirty years – and before becoming a union official he worked for the Post Office as an engineer. He has a pension from the Post Office Statutory Pension Scheme and is a member of the National Federation of Occupational Pensioners. He will be retiring from his Prospect role by 31 May 2017. Ben has been/is a Trustee of a number of pension schemes continuously for over thirty years, and is currently Chairman of the General Federation of Trade Unions pension scheme Trustees (a sectionalised multi–employer DB scheme) and a member of the Board of Governance of the Steria DC scheme since its creation in 2010 (which has some 4,000 members and assets of in excess of £100 million). In the past, he has been a Trustee of the BT Retirement Plan (now the BTRSS, and now a GPP) and of the Accenture AHRS DC Scheme.
Appointed: 1 September 1997. Billy McClory was employed by Post Office Telecommunications 1968-78, became a National Officer of CPSA, then NCU in 1984 and CWU in 1995. Responsible in the NCU for pension matters in the Post Office and BT, Billy was the lead officer on pension matters for the BT Unions 1990-97. He is a member of NFOP.
Appointed: 26 November 2012. Jim McInally is the HR Director, Reward & Employee Relations of BT Group. Jim is responsible for the functional leadership of Reward, Performance Management and Employee Relations across BT Group. He advises the Remuneration Committee and chairs the Company’s Global Pension & Benefits Management Group.
Jim is a member of BT’s Transformation Leadership Group and the HR Leadership Team. His earlier career was spent in senior roles at Reuters, Scottish Power, Standard Life and the Mobil Oil Corporation (now ExxonMobil).
Appointed 1st June 2009. Beryl Shepherd has been employed by BT since 1978 and is currently a member of the National Executive Committee of the CWU. A position that she has held since 2002. Beryl is also Vice President of the CWU and the Chair of the Telecoms and Financial Services sector. Beryl is the Chair of the Trustees of the National Communications Union Staff Superannuation Scheme (NCUSSS). She is an active member of BTPS and a member of the NFOP.
Appointed: 1 September 2009. Paul is a Non-Executive Chairman of BT Pension Scheme Management Limited and Hermes Fund Managers Limited. He acts as Chair of two British Airways Pension Schemes and also acts as Chair of the Trustees and of the Investment Committee for the Rolls-Royce plc Pension Fund.
He is a past Chairman of NS&I (National Savings and Investments) and State Street Managed Pension Funds. He was also formerly a Non-Executive Director of WPP, NipponKoa Europe Insurance Limited and TR Property Investment Trust. Paul is a past President of the Association of Corporate Treasurers and was appointed CBE in the 2010 New Year's Honours for ‘services to financial services'.
Appointed: 1 July 2007. John Wroe is Director - Group Treasury, Tax and Risk Management of BT Group, responsible for BT's tax, treasury, and risk management activities. John has a degree in economics and is a Chartered Accountant. He joined BT in 1992, prior to which he worked for Coopers & Lybrand. He is an active member of BTPS.
